With star performers and super finals, the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, with 250,000 tickets already sold, will start in one month, on August 19.
Balázs Németh, CEO of Budapest 2023 Nonprofit Zrt., the company organizing the event, stressed at Wednesday’s press conference that the organizing team had taken up offices at the National Athletics Center and would be working to ensure that everything runs perfectly for the remaining month.
He noted that
the World Championships will be the biggest sporting event in the history of not only Hungary, but of Central Europe, with some 2,000 athletes from more than 200 countries, hundreds of thousands of fans, and more than a billion TV viewers.
He added: “The World Championships is the third biggest outdoor event in the world, and with no Summer Olympics or Football World Cup in 2023, this is the biggest event of the year.”
Németh promised that in line with the special event, the opening night of the World Championships will feature star guests and surprise gifts for spectators. The grand opening ceremony, which he described as the biggest party of the summer, will start at 03:45 pm, but he did not say who would be performing during the evening when asked by journalists.
The CEO pointed out that ticket sales had picked up in recent days, with groups from India, Japan, and Chile, for example, signing up on Wednesday morning.
In total, more than 250,000 tickets have already been sold, but a limited number of tickets are still available for all nine days of the event.
He also said that a television base was being set up next to the National Athletics Center to broadcast the World Championships. Four hundred trucks have arrived on site and a further 20 trucks from various TV companies are expected in the coming weeks.
On August 19, three finals will be held at the National Athletics Center. On this day, Bence Halász, the World bronze medalist in the hammer throw, will take to the pitch. Furthermore, the 4×400 meters mixed relay, the only event in which men and women compete together, will be held on the first evening. In addition, the fastest men in the world will make their debut in the preliminary heats of the men’s 100m flat race.
The organizers’ statement also points out that a series of national, European, and world records have been broken in recent years, and this means that
one of the most exciting athletics world championships of all time is set to take place between August 19 and 27 at the National Athletics Center in Budapest.
