The Hungarian 4x200m women’s freestyle relay team of Nikolett Pádár, Panna Ugrai, Dóra Molnár, and Minna Ábrahám secured a historic silver medal at the World Aquatics Swimming Championships (25m) 2024 in Budapest on Thursday.

This achievement marked the first time a Hungarian relay team medaled at the short-course championships, and the women’s team also became the first to reach the podium in both short-course and large-pool world championship history.

The Hungarians made a spectacular start, with Pádár and Ugrai leading the team to first place at the halfway point, even within world-record pace.

Despite slipping to third during Dóra Molnár’s segment, Minna Ábrahám delivered a sensational anchor leg, propelling the team to second place.

The relay team shattered the Hungarian national record with a time of 7:33.39, surpassing the previous record of 7:39.21 set in 2014 in Doha.

The United States claimed gold with a world record of 7:30.13, while Australia took bronze, finishing just 0.21 seconds behind Hungary.

  2. Hungary (Pádár, Ugrai, Molnár, Ábrahám) – 7:33.39 (National Record)

This was Hungary’s second medal at the event, following Hubert Kós’s silver in the 100m backstroke. The Hungarian, who was Olympic champion in Paris in the 200 meter backstroke, set a new national record of 48.79 seconds and was only beaten by three hundredths by the victorious Russian Miron Lifintsev, who set a junior world record. The 21-year-old Hubert Kós won a medal in front of his home crowd for the first time in his career.
