“We will get EU funds without becoming Brussels’s colony,” Says Viktor Orbán

Hungary Today 2025.04.25.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was a guest on Kossuth Radio on Friday, where he spoke about Pope Francis’s legacy, Ukraine’s accession to the EU, and the related national consultation. He also touched upon the EU funds Hungary is entitled to but has not yet received.

Pope Francis

Pope Francis was a man of peace, gentle, and unwaveringly courageous, and this was particularly important to us Hungarians, Viktor Orbán emphasized. The Prime Minister explained that standing up for peace over the past three years has meant daily attacks, stigmatization, and vilification, and that the Holy Father had also been under constant fire from the pro-war propaganda network, which tried to get him to give up his pro-peace stance, but he had not done so. This was particularly important for Hungarians, because in the three years leading up to Donald Trump’s victory, only two countries in the entire Western world stood up consistently for peace: Hungary and the Vatican, Viktor Orbán remarked.

He added that when you are alone, and we have always been alone in the European Council, the importance of every friendship and every sign of support grows. This includes Pope Francis, who constantly called on Hungary to stand up courageously for peace, and whose support has given “supernatural weight to the truth,” to peace, that is, to the cause that we Hungarians also represent, he pointed out.

As Mr. Orbán put it,

it is of great importance to Hungary who will be the next Holy Father, because the Hungarian Catholic Church plays an important role in the life of our society: it runs educational institutions, cares for the elderly, and is heavily involved in the integration of the Roma community, not to mention matters of faith.

Ukraine’s EU Accession

The Prime Minister emphasized that new members are usually accepted into the EU because it is “good for us,” those who are already members, and this was also the case with Hungary and other countries in the region. “If we were to accept Ukraine and it would be good for us, then I would gladly say yes,” he said, adding that he was certain that the opposite would be true.

He emphasized that if there were a free influx of Ukrainian workers, “it would be up to individuals to protect their own jobs;” thus, the greatest achievement of the past 15 years, full employment, “could vanish into thin air in a year or two.” Mr. Orbán added that

Ukraine’s accession would completely reshape the financial foundations of the European agricultural economy, leaving “no money for Hungarian farmers” and putting hundreds of thousands of families in a very difficult situation.

On the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, he said that it would be good to put an end to the war psychosis in Europe. Without the United States, he believes Ukraine has no chance of maintaining its current position. The Slovaks and Hungarians support peace, while the others are insisting on continuing the war and increasing the level of assistance, and the Hungarian opposition in Brussels wants Hungary to contribute billions to this cause. “This is hopeless, a leadership mistake, an unviable idea, only a matter of time, and the warmongers must turn to the side where the peace-loving countries want to achieve peace,” Mr. Orbán stressed.

Tisza Party

The Prime Minister recalled that the opposition Tisza Party allegedly has an agreement with Manfred Weber, the leader of the European People’s Party, which is the strongest bloc in the European Parliament: they have accepted the Hungarian opposition party into their ranks, and it will receive support from the European People’s Party, for example by suspending funds due to Hungary, lowering the standard of living of Hungarians, thereby helping them to gain power, and in return, the Tisza Party will finally implement what Brussels wants.

Mr. Orbán believes that this would mean “no more migrant-free Hungary, because migrants will be allowed in; no more child protection in Hungary, because LGBTQ people will be given free rein; and no more peace-loving Hungary, because we will fall into line and support military action in Ukraine.” He added that Brussels also expects the Tisza Party to support Ukraine’s rapid accession to the European Union, and this has been included in its program.

EU Funds

Orbán recalled Tisza Party MEP Kinga Kollár’s statements when she said that withholding EU funds to Hungary has led to a deterioration in the living standards of Hungarians, which will strengthen the opposition’s chances in the 2026 elections. “We have learned another name of someone who, with Gyurcsány-like (former socialist PM Ferenc Gyurcsán) shamelessness, has thrown in the faces of Hungarians that she works every day in Brussels to prevent Hungarians from receiving funds, thus preventing the renovation of hospitals,” the Prime Minister underlined.

We get up in the morning for our own success and that of our country, for example to improve the quality of public services and to have good hospitals, but there are a few dozen people in Brussels who are working to prevent the Hungarian people from achieving any of this.

This is unacceptable, and I would need to use strong words that are not suitable for a microphone to describe it. And they are paid for this, seven, eight, nine million forints a month, and they are destroying the standard of living of Hungarians,” he pointed out.

He added that Hungary is entitled to EU funds, of which it has so far managed to obtain 13 billion euros. Thanks to this, teachers’ salaries have been raised, and at least one billion forints will be received this year, with more to come next year. There is still more than ten billion euros to be obtained, he stated. “Brussels says that if we were warmongers, allowed migration, and gave up child protection, we would get the money. This money will definitely arrive, and we will bring it home while preserving our country’s independence,” the Prime Minister stated.
