The night service of the Adria InterCity, operating with sleeping and dining cars, will also connect Budapest with Split this summer, just like in the years before, Hungarian rail passenger transport company MÁV-START told MTI. The service, selected by The Guardian in 2022 as one of Europe’s 10 best rail journeys, will run three times a week from June 9 to September 30.
New compared to last year, the train will run three times a week until June 17 in the pre-season, and then from August 28 in the post-season as well. The Adria InterCity will run from Budapest every Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday and from Split every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday.
It was mentioned that the service was used by 5,500 passengers in 2021, despite the epidemic situation, but in 2022, the number of passengers doubled to 11,900. Almost 4,300 passengers bought tickets to the higher class, more comfortable sleeping cars, they added.
The InterCity arrives in the center of Split, meaning that tourists disembarking the train can immediately enjoy the city and do not necessarily have to go far from the station to reach their hotel.
It is possible to sleep through most of the 789-kilometer journey, and this year passengers’ peace of mind will not be disturbed by border controls. All the cars on the route are air-conditioned, and there are power sockets in the cabins.

The Intercity will depart from Budapest at 6:45 pm and cross the border along the southern shore of Lake Balaton. It arrives in Split at 9:44 in the morning. On the return journey, the InterCity departs Split at 5:55 pm, arriving in Budapest at 9:35 am the next day. In addition to Budapest (Keleti Railway Station and Budapest-Kelenföld), the train also provides service in Székesfehérvár, Siófok, Fonyód, Balatonszentgyörgy, Nagykanizsa, and Gyékényes, both ways.
MÁV’s announcement is definitely good news for Hungarians, who love Croatia and the Croatian coast, if only because of its proximity. The Croatian coast is one of the most popular destinations for Hungarians, and from the western part of Hungary, close to the border, it takes just three hours to reach the coast.
