“We are now at the end, nearing the end of our possibilities. In the history of all wars there has been a point that offers the possibility of turning back from war, and we are very close to that point,” Viktor Orbán said on Kossuth Radio’s Good Morning, Hungary! program.
“We have not isolated this regional conflict, and now the war in Ukraine is appearing all over the world. Hope is fading day by day,” Magyar Nemzet quoted the Prime Minister as saying. The Prime Minister noted that what journalists are informing people about will by then have been decided. He sees a war psychosis in Europe that will have a logical outcome. Namely, the arrival of military units from Western European countries on Ukrainian territory.
Mr. Orbán argued:
If one assesses where we have come from in two years, it is clear that we are heading towards war.”
In his opinion, every step taken by the West is met with a Russian response, which brings with it the escalation of the war, and “we are in the final moments before reaching a point of no return.”
The Prime Minister stressed that Hungary must remain out of NATO’s military mission in Ukraine at all costs. This would mean that control over Hungarian military units would be transferred to the NATO commander, and from then on, Hungarian troops would no longer be able to be kept out of the war. He added that it must be made clear that Hungary has the right to stick to the NATO treaty to which we have acceded.
It defines NATO as a defense alliance, hence no one can force us to take part in military action outside NATO territory, nor can they force us to give money for it.”
As he said, NATO now demands USD 45 billion a year from member states, a demand the Hungarian Prime Minister has refused to endorse.
“We have already lost a lot in the war because people are financing it against their will,” Mr. Orbán said. He noted that a war surcharge would have to be paid in shops because the economy was not functioning as it should. “We have to keep paying into the EU coffers the sums that Brussels sends to Ukraine,” he added.
As for the repurchase of Liszt Ferenc International Airport, the Prime Minister said that the fact that it was returned to Hungarian ownership had increased people’s wealth. He added that a French company had been taken on to run the airport. “The French are among the best in the world, and a Qatari company may also join in later,” he announced.
