This year, the 45-year-old Farm Theater (Tanyaszínház) in Vojvodina is touring with a performance entitled Wayfinders (Útkeresők), based on Sándor Petőfi’s epic “The Hammer of the Village” (A helység kalapácsa), Pannon RTV reported in Subotica (Szabadka), presenting the preparations for the performance.

The premiere will take place on 22 July in Kavilo, the headquarters of the company in northern Bačka, and afterwards the play will be taken to several towns in Vojvodina.

The occasion for the performance is the Sándor Petőfi Memorial Year, the 200th anniversary of the poet’s birth.

The special feature of this year’s production is that the founders of the Farm Theater – director György Hernyák and actor Frigyes Kovács – are once again working together.

György Hernyák told Pannon RTV that Petőfi’s epic is only the starting point of the performance, the play incorporates the figures of Sándor Petőfi, the actor, the poet and the revolutionary as well.

The composition of the company of the theater is constantly changing, as students of the Novi Sad Academy of Arts spend part of their summer holidays here.

Founded in 1978, the Vojvodina Farm Theater used to travel through the villages of Vojvodina with a donkey carriage, but nowadays it uses a tractor. The company goes to places where there are no suitable venues for stone theater performances. The theater, unique in the Carpathian Basin, has performed in the Slovenian Muravian region, in Hungarian settlements in Croatia and in Hungary.
