Visegrád Four Want Long-term Peace in Europe, President Novák Assures

MTI-Hungary Today 2022.10.12.

The common aim of the Visegrád Four countries is to secure a just peace in the ongoing war and ensure long-term peace in Europe, President Katalin Novák said after the summit of the V4 heads of state.

Hungarian President Katalin Novák attended the summit of the Visegrád Four (Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic) presidents in Bratislava on Tuesday. The social and economic challenges posed by the Russian-Ukrainian war, and the worsening energy crisis were on the agenda.

“We strongly condemn Putin’s aggression, we condemn the armed attack on a sovereign and independent state, we condemn the announcement of the annexation of Ukrainian territory and the bombing of civilian targets,” Novák wrote on Facebook after her discussions with Polish President Andrzej Duda, Czech President Milos Zeman, and Slovakian President Zuzana Caputová.

“We will do everything possible to put in place the conditions for a just peace as soon as possible, as we must preserve for our children and grandchildren the secure life that has been ours,”

she added.

According to MTI, Novák called the recent attacks against the Nord Stream gas pipelines “unacceptable.” The V4 demands a thorough and swift investigation with a view to preventing any further similar attacks, she said.

The President emphasized that Visegrád countries were particularly affected by illegal migration and a strong, common response is needed. She also said that from the first day of the war, Hungarians had provided shelter and other aid to refugees from Ukraine.
