Villages Are Not a Thing of the Past, but the Future, Says Commissioner

MTI-Hungary Today 2025.03.27.

The government has decided to expand the Hungarian Village program with new elements, announced Alpár Gyopáros, Government Commissioner for the Development of Modern Settlements.

The government commissioner said that small settlements have been the focus of government activity for six years, as the Prime Minister announced the Hungarian Village program in 2018. In the period since then, countless developments have been implemented in small settlements from purely domestic budget resources, which were requested by the people living there themselves.

Alpár Gyopáros explained that, based on the government’s decision, the program will be expanded by four elements, two of which—support for small shops and the church renovation program—will be restarted, while the other two—support for small settlement pubs and the program for installing ATMs—are completely new.

The new program will provide up to three million forints (7,500 euros) in operational support for small shops in settlements with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants, including butcher shops that sell daily necessities or meat.

Additionally, the government will launch an ATM installation program in small settlements where it is absolutely necessary to promote the use of cash as a constitutional right. The church renovation program will be restarted, and

the support for village pubs will be extended to settlements with fewer than 2,000 inhabitants.

A program for renovating village streets and sidewalks will also be launched this year, followed by a village building renovation initiative. Additionally, a village bus application will be available again, as stated by the government commissioner.
