Village Football Club Knocks Out Hungarian Champions

The MOL Hungarian Cup football championship took a half-shocking, half-comical turn when during the Wednesday round the local team of a small village knocked out the Hungarian club champions, Ferencváros.

In normal time, Iváncsa, playing in the third league of the national championship (NB III) scored twice against Ferencváros to make it 2:2. However, they took the lead in overtime thus eliminating the Hungarian champions and cup winners.

In the first part of the 2 x 15 minutes extra time, the amateurs of Iváncsa, a village of just 2900 inhabitants, scored a goal and successfully defended until the end of the match. In the second half of extra time, Ferencváros gave it all, and although they went into attacking mode, they could not score. The Hungarian champions and cup winners were thus eliminated from this year’s MOL cup series.

Their stunning 3-2 victory over the Budapest giants, who have dominated Hungarian club football for decades, means that the NB III side Iváncsa will progress to the fifth round of the MOL Hungarian Cup. Coach Stanislav Cherchesov’s champion side, who currently lead the Hungarian OTP Bank League, will have some explaining to do to the club’s owners and loyal fans on their return to the capital.
