Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán will not attend the inauguration of US President Donald Trump on 20 January, reported Telex.

The Prime Minister’s press chief, Bertalan Havasi, told Telex that Mr. Orbán is planning to deliver a speech at a conference in Budapest on 20 January to assess the results of the Hungarian EU Presidency. The inauguration of the 47th president of the United States will be held in Washington D.C. on 20 January.

The two politicians are considered allies and friends by most, hence the announcement is somewhat unexpected. Yet given the emphasis and importance the government had assigned to its six month rotating presidency of the EU, the news should not be interpreted as anything but a busy schedule on the Prime Minister’s side. It is not known whether anyone else would take his place at the global event representing Hungary.
