Viktor Orbán: “Peace negotiations should be assessed through Hungarian eyes”

MTI-Hungary Today 2025.02.25.

The Prime Minister said in his reply to the parliamentary groups in Parliament on Monday that the peace negotiations being prepared in connection with Ukraine war must be assessed from a Hungarian perspective, and that a peace agreement is needed which guarantees the security of Hungary and, through it, of Europeans.

Mr Orbán recalled that Hungary and the Vatican had been on the side of peace from the very beginning regarding the war, but now the United States is also on this side. In response to opposition critics who accused the governing parties of being pro-Russian, he added that this way, the United States was also being accused of being pro-Russian. “I would like to congratulate them on this opinion,” he said.

He suggested that the peace negotiations and peace agreement in the works should be assessed “through Hungarian eyes.”

Certainly, what happens to Ukraine is an important issue, but the most important issue is what happens to Hungary. And my interest is that peace negotiations and a peace agreement should be reached that guarantees Hungary’s security,”

the Prime Minister emphasized.

He indicated that he was not talking about Ukraine’s independence and Ukraine’s interests, as the opposition was. “That is not our job. We need a peace agreement that guarantees the security of Hungary and, through it, of Europeans,” he added.

He stressed that if it comes to pass that the attempt to bring Ukraine into NATO fails and Ukraine becomes a buffer state again, then the arrangements for this buffer state must be designed in such a way that they provide security for us Hungarians. This is the only consideration, he underlined.
