Prime Minister Viktor Orbán held talks with former US President Donald Trump on Thursday evening, as the next stage of his peace mission, Bertalan Havasi, the Prime Minister’s press chief, informed the media.
The meeting took place in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, and focused on peace options, the statement said. The Hungarian Prime Minister also posted about the meeting on his social media page: It was an honor to visit President Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago today. We discussed ways to make peace. The good news of the day: he’s going to solve it!”
With his last sentence, he probably referred to the fact that the Republican presidential candidate has repeatedly said that if elected, he could convince Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine and release US prisoners in Russia.
Peace mission 5.0

Mr Orbán described the meeting as “Peace mission 5.0.” The Prime Minister’s so-called peace mission began about a week ago, coinciding with the start of the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the EU. As reported by Hungary Today, last week, the Hungarian Prime Minister travelled first to Kyiv, then met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, and finally held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on the issue of the war in Ukraine. Mr Orbán also held talks with Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Washington that took place on July 9-11, calling the Turkish President an important partner in the peace mission.
The meeting with Donald Trump was first reported by Bloomberg yesterday. The article noted that the trip to Florida heightens concerns that the Hungarian Prime Minister is mediating between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump. However, Bloomberg‘s anonymous source said that the meeting was purely informal and that the former US President has not asked the Hungarian prime minister to lay the groundwork for any Ukrainian-Russian peace agreement or efforts.
