Viktor Orbán in Slovakia: Central Europe Must Be Taken Seriously

Aggressive and hostile statements are coming from Kyiv, the Prime Minister said at a press conference in Bratislava on Tuesday after talks with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico. According to Viktor Orbán, we need low energy prices, but what Brussels and Kiev are doing today is driving up energy prices.

In response to a question on the gas transit issue, the Hungarian Prime Minister said that aggressive and hostile statements would not solve the issue. Kyiv is no longer in the saddle so securely that it can afford to do so, he reminded. He added that “if they remain aggressive and hostile, they will lose. In the end, we will get angry and we will retaliate”.

He said that the way in which the Ukrainians are trying to control and shape relations with Central European countries today is unacceptable. “We will give them respect, but we expect them to give us respect and if we raise a serious issue, to be available to discuss it, as is the custom in Europe,” he stressed.

Mr Orbán said that whatever Brussels says about Ukraine’s EU membership, it will require a unanimous decision of the member states, and Hungary and Slovakia will decide on that too. He reminded that the Ukrainians must not behave as if the world, Bratislava and Budapest were dancing to their tune. They may have done under the US Democratic administration, but that is over now, and a new era of peace is coming.

The impression, he continued, is that Kyiv has not yet come to terms with the fact that the balance of power has radically changed and that the countries of Central Europe must be taken seriously.

On Ukraine’s membership of NATO, the Hungarian Prime Minister said it was not on the agenda and would never be, because there would never be unanimous support for it. Ukraine’s NATO membership means an immediate, direct, all-out war against Russia, he added.

He pointed out that if Ukraine joined the EU today, it would destroy Hungary. The EU does not have the money to admit Ukraine to the EU and “we do not want to ruin our own country.” Viktor Orbán emphasized that Ukraine’s membership of the EU is worth negotiating, but that accession is a process that cannot be completed for many years or decades. He also pointed out that EU membership is a decision for the member states, so it will not work if Ukraine antagonizes its neighbors. If Ukraine wants to do well for itself, it should settle its relations with Slovakia and Hungary, show respect and behave as a candidate for EU membership should, he stressed.

The Hungarian Prime Minister also said that after the war it would not be easy to find the right policy towards Ukraine, because “there will be a huge amount of weapons out there”, posing a risk to neighboring states.

There will also be a risk that money owed to Hungary and Slovakia will be diverted from Brussels to Ukraine, he pointed out, adding that regional cooperation will be needed to protect interests.

Mr Orbán emphasized that Hungarian-Slovak relations are very successful now, with Slovakia becoming Hungary’s second most important trading partner after Germany. He highlighted that bridges had been built, border crossings had been opened, electricity grids had been interconnected and natural gas connectors had been built, the capacity of which was now being increased by around one billion cubic meters.

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico talked how Slovakia supports Ukraine’s membership of the EU if the right conditions are met, but rejects its membership of NATO. He pointed out that there was no reason to change their position on the latter, as it would destroy peace initiatives and would be a huge security risk that would also pose a threat of a third world war.

Speaking about energy security, Fico emphasized that

the Ukrainian decision to halt gas transit through Ukraine was damaging not only Slovakia but the whole European Union.

Hungary and Slovakia will therefore work together to ensure that the European Commission takes this into account, he said. They are convinced that the European Union is there to protect the interests of its member states and only then can the interests of anyone else be discussed, he stressed.

Asked further, the Slovak Prime Minister said that it was in their primary interest that gas supplies from Ukraine to Slovakia should continue. He recalled that Slovakia has a live contract with Gazprom to buy gas at a certain price and that currently the only route for Russian gas to Central Europe is via Turkey. If it becomes possible for Slovakia to buy gas from the South Stream pipeline, diversification is of course a good solution, he said, adding that every opportunity will be taken to ensure that Slovakia is not only dependent on expensive gas from the West.
