Viktor Orbán: “Hungarians were Trumps even before Trump”

Hungary Today 2025.01.24.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán spoke on Kossuth Radio on Friday morning about the current main political issues. The discussion focused on yesterday’s bomb threat affecting over 300 educational institutions, but also touched on Donald Trump’s new measures and EU sanctions, reports Index.

“The Interior Ministry is working, they are investigating. I myself am uncertain about the outcome. Not about the determination of our police officers, because events have shown that when it comes to the state, it is in place, it has passed the test,” Viktor Orbán said in connection with the bomb threat affecting some 308 Hungarian educational institutions.

On Thursday, a threat was made against Hungarian schools in the name of Allah, and the letter writer called it an act of terrorism on a European scale. Police are still working hard to catch the perpetrators, and fortunately, no explosive devices have been found. The Prime Minister emphasized that life had returned to normal in schools, but “one fool makes a hundred,” meaning that a repeat of the crime was to be expected. Despite this, Mr Orbán said that on Thursday everyone could experience safety.

The Prime Minister also said that the problem would be even worse if “we had let the migrants in, because then there would be terrorist acts here too.” He added that regardless of public opinion, the most important thing is to keep it that way, because the migration pact is a mortal threat to Hungary.

The Prime Minister also spoke about the measures taken by US President Donald Trump since his inauguration. He said that for Europe, his actions show that “Hungarians were Trumps even before Trump.” According to Mr. Orbán, the Western world consists of two pillars now: a European and an American leg.

Isolated Hungary is now back on the main street of history. We are in the majority, but we still have to rebel. We are the new high street, but we still have to rebel in Brussels,”

the Prime Minister outlined.

Speaking about Donald Trump’s actions, he emphasized that according to the US President, there are two sexes: someone is either a man or a woman. “This is still missing from the Hungarian constitution, in which we have also stated that the father is a man, the mother is a woman,” Viktor Orbán said.

The Prime Minister also spoke about the war in Ukraine and domestic energy security, saying that “the Ukrainians want to mess with us, but we can defend ourselves if we remain united with the Serbs.” The government has built a bypass through which we can bring Russian gas to Hungary and even to the Slovaks. However, he added that even if we do get access to energy, it will be more expensive. Mr Orbán also said that if the Ukrainians did not mess with us, there would be better prices at petrol stations.

Regarding the EU sanctions, the Prime Minister stated that the situation is bad as it is, especially for us Hungarians. He recalled that Hungary had lost 7,500 billion forints (EUR 18.3 billion) over the past three years, which is far more than the amount that Hungarians pay to the state in income tax.

Viktor Orbán said he had told his Brussels colleagues to understand that Hungary was asking for help. “Tell the Ukrainians to open the gas taps,” he stated, adding that “they should not attack with semi-legal military means the route from which the gas enters Hungary.”

Speaking about the country’s economic situation, the Prime Minister recalled that

2024 was about regaining what we lost in 2023, and 2025 will be a year of progress.

He said that they had looked at the financial situation of families. 800,000-900,000 people receive interest on government bonds, and this is only 12 percent of total financial savings, meaning that around HUF 9,000 billion is in savings for Hungarians, which ranks the country 13th in the EU.

“I have looked at it and I have to say that we have a muscular middle class. The figures prove it,” the Prime Minister pointed out, adding that people do not even know this because they do not browse macroeconomic data, while in terms of net savings we are 13th in the EU.

Let us stop with this nonsense about Hungary being the poorest country in Europe. There is strength in the country,”

Orbán emphasized, citing as an example the 544,000 people who went on holiday this year and the 212,000 people who went abroad to spend the winter, four of whom were himself and his family.
