The Visegrád Four countries are ready to tackle the challenges of migration together with the Hungarian-Serbian-Austrian alliance. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán spoke optimistically about the future of the bloc at a summit on Thursday.
According to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, the countries of the Visegrád Group (V4): the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia are linked by difficult topics, and they can provide a response to the issues that arise within these topics more easily together than separately. “Accordingly, the Visegrád Group continues to have a future,” he said at a joint press conference with V4 prime ministers in Košice (Kassa), Slovakia, on Thursday.
Such common challenges include illegal migration, the energy crisis, preventing the economic recession, and the protection of the external Schengen borders,
he explained.
Speaking about the war in Ukraine, the prime minister said that Hungary is in an extraordinary position because it is the only country in Europe that is having to deal with two migrant crises simultaneously.
“This year, over a million Ukrainian refugees have arrived in Hungary, and over 250,000 illegal border-crossing attempts were also prevented at the country’s southern border,” he said. Orbán warned that migration pressure from both directions should be expected to increase.
He said he received a positive response from his colleagues concerning his question whether they can contribute to the Serbian-Austrian-Hungarian border protection cooperation. Orbán told journalists he will present a proposal to the Serbian President and the Austrian Chancellor asking them to accept the pledges made by the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Poland.
