Viktor Orbán was a guest on Kossuth Radio on Friday Morning where he talked about Ukrainian scams targeting Hungarians and the Voks 2025 referendum on the neighboring country’s EU membership. The Prime Minister also touched upon the natural disaster in Praid (Parajd, Romania) affecting the famous salt mine there.
“Everyone who has a bank card or digitally managed savings is at risk,” Viktor Orbán stated in connection with Ukrainian online frauds. The Prime Minister recalled that online fraud has existed for some time, written in broken Hungarian, but that it has now become more sophisticated. He indicated that the authorities need to devote much more energy to raising awareness and providing assistance. He added that the fraud committed so far amounts to eight billion forints.
The Prime Minister emphasized that they are trying to recover the money and have managed to recover one and a half of the eight billion. He called for additional funding for the police so that more people can work on preventing fraud.

Orbán remarked that
Ukrainian criminal groups are behind 80 percent of online fraud, but the police have the means to successfully take action against international fraudsters.
These criminal groups operate with a Ukrainian background, are made up of Ukrainian people, and have their headquarters in Ukraine, he said. The Ukrainian mafia operates mafia-like networks not only in the traditional form, but also in sophisticated, modern ways, he added.
Mr. Orbán reported that 169 suspects have been identified so far, and international arrest warrants have been issued for most of them, which the European international arrest warrant system can help with.
The Prime Minister confirmed that more than 1.6 million votes have already been cast in the Voks 2025 referendum on Ukraine’s EU membership. He said that
at the CPAC conference, currently taking place in Budapest, he had noticed from the views of foreign guests that the peoples of Europe agree that Ukraine’s admission would cause problems.
In contrast to Hungary, however, it is not customary in Western Europe to ask the people about such issues, because the elite reserves this right for itself, he added. He pointed out that yesterday at CPAC, we saw the entire Western world line up to take over the leadership of their own countries. In his opinion, this movement is slowly but surely gaining the majority in Europe. There are increasingly strong voices saying that there is no place for Ukraine’s accelerated accession to the EU.

He believed that leaders in Brussels are using Ukraine’s membership to take even more powers away from Member States and transfer them to Brussels. This must be opposed because it will be bad for us, he said. The Prime Minister added that there are already many people who feel this way, but they are not well organized, which is why the Patriots for Europe group was founded, and they are growing stronger.
Orbán emphasized that one of the most serious issues is strengthening defense capabilities. Since Russia is considered a threat, we could easily get caught up in an arms race that would consume the Hungarian people’s money, he said, stressing that it is in Hungary’s interest to have a ceasefire and peace, followed by arms control negotiations.
Ukraine’s membership would be economic suicide. It would have economic consequences that would destroy the European economy, especially in neighboring countries,
the Prime Minister argued. In his opinion, efforts must be made to ensure that everyone has a job, but if large numbers of workers arrive, this will cause problems. Furthermore, the pension system and the protection of agriculture also require that Ukraine’s membership be rejected, he added.
At the weekly cabinet meeting, it was decided to extend the measure affecting profit margins, despite requests from retailers to phase it out due to product shortages and the possibility that foreign suppliers could replace Hungarian ones if the measure remained in place. Mr. Orbán said that the regulation had lived up to expectations in terms of reducing profit margins. Nevertheless, he also emphasized that the shock of high prices and inflation will not disappear overnight, and that people feel threatened, are vigilant, and are taking precautions.
The prices of 900 food products have been reduced, and margin regulation has recently been introduced for drugstores, with 420 products becoming cheaper. Things are better than they were, the problem is smaller, the Prime Minister explained, recalling that the government had set a 10 percent margin on food and a 15 percent margin on drugstore products, anything above that being an unjustified price increase.
Regarding the natural disaster in Praid (Parajd, Romania), affecting the famous salt mine, Orbán said that Praid is part of the Hungarian national consciousness, emphasizing that so many Hungarians have visited the area over the past 10-15 years that they have grown to love it and feel that it belongs to them.
What is happening there is as if it were happening to us,”
the Prime Minister stated. He added that many people, not just the government, have mobilized to provide assistance, but the situation is very difficult, almost hopeless. He explained that there are other areas in the Szekler region and its surroundings where the situation is serious and help will be needed. In these places, the water is one to two meters high in the gardens and houses due to floods caused by heavy rain, so the Hungarians living there will need help.
Orbán emphasized that
the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ) is a well-organized party that represents the interests of Hungarians in Transylvania well, not only politically, but also economically.
He recalled that he had consulted with party President Hunor Kelemen when the situation became serious and promised that the Hungarian Government would provide all possible support, not only to Praid, but to all Hungarians living there.
