In a recent interview on Kossuth Radio’s program Good Morning, Hungary! program, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán criticized the performance of Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, and articulated his views on European politics and the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Mr. Orbán framed Ms. von der Leyen not as a political adversary but as an “employee” who should implement the directives of the prime ministers. He highlighted the need for a shift in European policy and the importance of national sovereignty.
The Prime Minister expressed dissatisfaction with Ursula von der Leyen’s leadership over the past five years, describing her performance as “dew-poor.” He criticized her handling of the EU’s green transition and her approach to the war in Ukraine, arguing that
the EU is not prioritizing peace but rather contributing to the conflict.
Viktor Orbán emphasized that von der Leyen is not a political opponent but “our employee,” suggesting that the real issue lies in the prime ministers’ lack of effective oversight.
He stressed that the center of European policy is the European Council, where prime ministers should set the direction. He expressed disappointment in Ursula von der Leyen’s re-election, citing her failure to meet the Council’s guidelines. Mr. Orbán hoped for a change in the composition of European leaders through upcoming national elections, which he believes could lead to better guidance for Ms. von der Leyen and a more accountable approach from prime ministers.
Viktor Orbán highlighted the growing influence of the Patriots for Europe (PfE) in the European Parliament, asserting that it is the third largest group and will soon form significant alliances.
He expressed optimism that PfE will achieve a breakthrough in the upcoming elections, including in Austria, and emphasized that, with support from the US presidential elections, they could become the majority in the Western world by year-end.
Viktor Orbán criticized the EU’s pro-war stance regarding Ukraine, arguing that the conflict’s continuation is detrimental to European interests.
He suggested that peace negotiations require a unified effort from major global players like China, the US, and the EU.
He also noted that while China and potentially the US under Donald Trump are pro-peace, the current EU policy needs to shift from a pro-war to a pro-peace stance. The Prime Minister emphasized the need for persistence in peace efforts and daily negotiations.
Mr. Orbán underscored the importance of national sovereignty and competitiveness in Europe. He announced that Hungary would present a competitiveness pact aimed at enhancing European economic performance, particularly amid the ongoing war. The Prime Minister criticized the large sums of money being sent to Ukraine, arguing that it diverts resources from essential European projects. He stressed that improving competitiveness and achieving peace are crucial for Hungary’s economic growth and overall well-being.
In his interview, Viktor Orbán outlined his discontent with Ursula von der Leyen’s leadership and the EU’s current policies.
He called for a more effective European Council and expressed hope for a shift towards pro-peace policies as national elections reshape the political landscape. Prime Minister Orbán’s emphasis on national sovereignty, competitiveness, and the need for a coordinated peace effort reflects his broader vision for Hungary’s role in Europe and the global arena.
