Viktor Orbán Courts Closer Cooperation with Huawei During Visit to China

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán visited Huawei as part of his multi-day visit to China for the Belt and Road Forum. Following the meetings, Minister of Economic Development Márton Nagy and Gao Weijie, CEO of Huawei Technologies Hungary and Western Balkans Region, signed a Memorandum of Understanding, further deepening the strategic cooperation between the Hungarian government and Huawei that was established in 2013.

The parties agreed that the digital transformation of industry and economy is an area of strategic importance that offers significant opportunities for Hungary. In order to take advantage of this, Huawei is developing forward-looking relationships with players in the Hungarian technology ecosystem.

Neumann Nonprofit Ltd. and professional cooperation forums such as the 5G Coalition and the Artificial Intelligence Coalition, consider Huawei a partner in promoting digital transformation.

The document states that Hungary is committed to achieving energy sovereignty, the green transition, and the exploitation of renewable energy production, in which it also counts on Huawei’s cooperation, especially with regard to the application of related digital technologies and smart energy systems, further enhancing more efficient, reliable, and sustainable energy production and consumption.

Under the agreement just signed, Huawei will also participate in the development of charging systems and infrastructure related to electric vehicle technology in Hungary, in order to ensure a high quality, safe, and reliable network in the country.

Speaking about the signing, the minister of Economic Development stressed that Hungary aims to become one of the 10 best performing countries in the European Union in terms of digital economic and social development by 2030, and reliable, high-quality technology partners such as Huawei play an important role in this.

Nagy added that in order to maintain the competitiveness of the Hungarian economy, a double transformation is needed, i.e. businesses and economic operators must implement both digitization and the green transition. The solutions of artificial intelligence, big data, and Industry 4.0 should be applied, as they offer a lot of potential for development and competitiveness. This is the basis for sustainable and dynamic economic growth, protecting jobs and families.

Huawei is present in more than 170 countries, serving around three billion people, while more than half of its employees work in Research & Development. Huawei is present in Hungary with all its business units. Furthermore, the group’s largest logistics and manufacturing base outside China, the Huawei’s European Supply Center, is located in Hungary, employing more than 2,000 people.
