Prime Minister Viktor Orbán attended the funeral ceremony of Jacques Delors, former President of the European Commission, in Paris on the invitation of the French Head of State Emmanuel Macron.

Jacques Delors passed away at the end of December at the age of 98. He headed the EU executive for 10 years between 1985 and 1995, playing a key role in the founding of the euro and the shape of the European Union as we know it today. He was an important figure in the creation of the common market, the Schengen area, Erasmus programs, and common agricultural policy, among others.
“Jacques Delors was always working for reconciliation, looking for alternatives, building bridges,”
said Emmanuel Macron at a formal funeral service in the Invalides’ courtyard. The French President added that after Delors’ death, the work he had begun would continue.
Following the President’s eulogy, La Marseillaise and the Ode to Joy, the anthem of Europe, were sung.
Jacques Delors, born on July 20, 1925, was a French economist and statesman. He served as the President of the European Commission from 1985 to 1995. Renowned for shaping the European Union’s economic integration, he played a pivotal role in the creation of the single market. Delors’ leadership laid the groundwork for a more unified and prosperous Europe.
