Prime Minister Viktor Orbán received Alice Weidel, co-chair of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, in his office in Budapest on Tuesday. The meeting, the second of its kind since February, focused on the current challenges facing Europe and the vision of a strong Europe made up of sovereign nation states.
On Tuesday morning, the Hungarian Prime Minister announced the visit of a “German heavyweight party leader” in the Facebook group “Harcosok Klubja” (Fight Club), provocatively asking: “What will become of you, Germany? What will become of you, AfD?”
In his post, he emphasized their shared rejection of a “United States of Europe” and their desire for a European Union based on strong, mutually respectful member states.
After the meeting, Viktor Orbán commented on X: “It was a pleasure to welcome Chairwoman Alice Weidel to Budapest. Europe faces major challenges. Lack of economic competitiveness, illegal migration, and war in our immediate neighborhood are all symptoms of our decline. We will work together in the coming years to deal with these issues and make Europe great again!“

Alice Weidel also shared Orbán’s post and commented on the exchange: “Today I was back in Budapest to talk with Viktor Orbán about current EU affairs. We had a lot of work ahead of us to refocus the EU on its core tasks. Our goal is a strong Europe of sovereign nations, with citizens at the heart of politics.”

At their last meeting in February, Orbán had already emphasized that
Hungary would benefit from the implementation of the AfD program on important issues ranging from energy policy to migration. He also underscored the need to end the exclusion of the AfD.
Weidel last attended the CPAC Budapest conference in Hungary in May. The repeated meetings between Orbán and the co-chair of the AfD underscore the growing rapprochement between Fidesz and the AfD, and their shared aspirations to steer European politics in a direction that assigns a central role to nation states and citizens.
