Vibrant Cultural Celebration Highlights the 31st Saint George Days

The 31st St. George Days in Sfântu Gheorghe (Sepsiszentgyörgy), Szeklerland, Romania, commences with a cultural week on Monday, featuring performances by the Bagossy Brothers Company and the Csík Zenekar during the festival weekend that starts on Friday.

Scheduled between April 23-28, the St. George Days will host 150 programs across various venues.

The largest Szekler celebration kicks off  on Monday, “as day zero.” This includes a literary evening with György Dragomán and Anna Szabó T., followed by the premiere of the play The Lourcine Street Affair at the Tamási Áron Theater, directed by Árpád Barabás.

On Tuesday, the public is invited to a puppet theater and a studio visit, alongside traditional festive concerts featuring local and guest artists, dance and theater performances, literary events, and art exhibitions.

Wednesday holds, among other events, a commemorative Shakespeare Memorial Day held in honor of Attila Nagy, a Shakespeare scholar, university professor, and full member of the Hungarian Academy of Arts. The Romanian public is invited to an audience meeting with writer Radu Vancu. Thursday hosts the 17th Kálmán Nagy Kopeczky Children’s Theater Meeting, with organizers preparing an ever-expanding program of cultural events for children and youngsters.

The festival weekend, beginning on Friday, offers programs for different age groups on the main square stage, in the museum garden and scrap yard, on the community stage in the courtyard of the Kónya Ádám Cultural Center, and at the Youth Base in the courtyard of the former cigarette factory.

Performances by the Bagossy Brothers Company, Csík Zenekar, Connect-R, Halott Pénz, Lidia Buble, Moby Dick, Raklap, Sepsi Gospel Band, and Luiza Zan are scheduled.

On Sunday, the Pro Urbe Award will be presented at the Szekler National Museum during the City Days celebration, honoring four distinguished personalities aged 70 and over: Béla Kató, Bishop of the Transylvanian Reformed Diocese, art historian Mihály Jánó, former constitutional judge Bálint Puskás, and athletics coach Carol Santa.
