The 7th Rátonyi Róbert Operetta Festival will be held in Veszprém (western Hungary) on June 20-23. The opening parade will feature operetta hits and circus performers. The festival will offer theater performances and concerts in several locations around the city, said the creative manager of the Petőfi Theater of Veszprém, the host of the festival.

Zsuzsanna Kellerné Egresi said that on the first day of the program, Imre Kálmán’s Csárdás Princess (Csárdáskirálynő) will be staged under the direction of Árpád Zsolt Mészáros. An interesting feature of the performance is that the director will also appear in front of the audience for a humorous scene and a solo song.

Fact

Róbert Rátonyi (1923-1992) was one of the greatest stars of Hungarian operetta, whose career breakthrough came with his performance in the popular operetta, the Csárdás Princess, in 1954.

Rátonyi spent the last four years of his career in Veszprém. In his last years, he wanted to stage Csárdás Princess at the Veszprém theater, but his severe illness prevented him from bringing it to the stage, and died at the age of 69. The Operetta Festival was launched to honor him and his art. Every year, the Petőfi Theater of Veszprém brings the immortal works of the operetta world to the stage with today’s greatest operetta performers.

At the festival, the Veszprém company will present one of the most successful Hungarian operetta musicals, Mike the Magnate (Mágnás Miska), directed by Pál Oberfrank.

The Hungarian Theater of New York will perform the Hungarian comedy Oh, Bloody Life (Te rongyos élet) directed by Szilvia Kovács.

A gala performance by the Budapest Gypsy Symphony Orchestra will be performed jointly with the artists of the Budapest Operetta Theater.

One of the city’s iconic streets will be renamed Szirmai Street in memory of Albert Szirmai, a composer and conductor (1880-1967), and a courtyard in the city center will bear the name of the composer Jenő Huszka (1875-1960) during the festival days.

Following the great success of last year, the event will close with live music and a grand International Operetta Gala,

Hirado.hu reports. The Rátonyi Róbert Operetta Festival is a real family event, with entertainment for all generations, from grandparents to the youngest children.
