Veszprém HC claimed their first-ever IHF World Men’s Handball Championship in Egypt after a thrilling 34-33 extra-time victory over three-time champions SC Magdeburg.

The road to the title was no easy feat for Veszprém, as they dominated Brazil’s Taubaté by 26 goals in the group stage, followed by a convincing seven-goal win over Egypt’s Zamalek SC. In the semi-final, they faced defending Champions League winners Barcelona, securing a five-goal victory after extra time.

In the final against Magdeburg, Veszprém started strong, taking an early lead before Magdeburg recovered to go ahead.

Despite a challenging first half and several missed opportunities, Veszprém fought back, regaining momentum with a 7-1 run in the second half.

Their patience and tactical adjustments paid off, and the match entered extra time after both teams failed to capitalize on late scoring chances.

Goalkeeper Rodrigo Corrales played a pivotal role, making 14 crucial saves that kept Veszprém in the game during key moments. In extra time, Veszprém secured the lead again, and despite intense pressure from Magdeburg, they held on to clinch the victory and their first world championship trophy.

László Nagy, the club’s sporting director, emphasized the emotional impact of the victory:

it was an exciting match, and we expected something like this. Amazing fight and good individual performances on both sides.”

He added, “For a start, it is a huge emotional energy bomb, and the players will feed off that a lot.”

Veszprém’s victory marks a significant achievement for Hungarian handball, positioning the team as a global contender and giving them confidence heading into future competitions.
