On the evening of September 3, an act of vandalism occurred in Komárno (Komárom, Slovakia) when unknown perpetrators knocked down the statue of Hungarian King Béla III, created by renowned sculptor György Bartusz.

Felvidek.ma reports that the incident was captured on surveillance video and shows two young men climbing the statue’s pedestal and causing it to fall before fleeing the scene. The statue, a significant work by Bartusz, has been severely damaged.

According to art historian Éva Dénes, the bronze sculpture may never be restored to its original state, as repairs would require recasting the damaged parts.

The city authorities are seeking public assistance to identify and locate the vandals. The city police urge anyone with information or those seen in the video to come forward. The potential consequences for the perpetrators include legal action for the significant damage inflicted on a valuable cultural asset.
