In the framework of a campaign called Open Balaton promoting Lake Balaton, the Balaton Tourism Association has collected and published the best places where couples can go around Valentine’s Day, reports Turizmus.com.
One of the best-known romantic meeting places is located at the Panorama Lookout on the High Coast in Balatonvilágos. The white-painted Bridge of Sighs, known to many as the “Bridge of Lovers,” has a number of love locks on the stands placed next to it.
The legend of the Rózsakő (“Rose Stone”) in Badacsony is linked to the Hungarian poet Sándor Kisfaludy (1772-1844).
The legend says that if a couple sits on the stone, they will get married that same year.
The origin of the story lies in the fact that Hungarian poet Sándor Kisfaludy and his wife Róza enjoyed sitting on this flat basalt stone.
The statue on the Heart of Balaton (Balaton szíve) Square in Zamárdi is also a favorite of many couples.
If you look through the opening of the heart-shaped statue, you can admire the magnificent panorama of the Benedictine Abbey of Tihany.
If you are heading towards the Bakony, you can also stop by Berhida. Near the Kistó playground, a “love gate” welcomes couples. Once you have put the love lock on, you can throw the key in the bottom of the lake, as is a tradition here.
Those who stroll along the promenade in Kenese should also take a small heart-shaped padlock with them, as should couples visiting the piers in Keszthely, Balatonfüred, or Balatonlelle. On the terrace of Hotel Balaton in Fonyód there is a so-called love lock center. Anyone can put their love token on the 50-meter iron fence.
Today, on February 14, a brand new padlock wall will also be unveiled in the Szántódpuszta Majorság, next to the St. Christopher’s Chapel. Marriages in the chapel are said by the residents of the village to last forever.
