V4 Farmers’ Organizations Hold a Joint Demonstration

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.02.19.

The Chambers of Agriculture from the Visegrád countries (Hungary, Slovakia, Czechia, and Poland), joined by Latvia and Lithuania, will stage a joint demonstration on February 22nd, led by Balázs Győrffy, President of the Hungarian Chamber of Agriculture (NAK).

The event aims to highlight the adverse impact of Ukrainian grain and food imports on European farmers. In recent years, European farmers have found themselves ensnared in a complex web of challenges stemming from agricultural policies and shifting trade dynamics. Balázs Győrffy, President of the Hungarian Chamber of Agriculture, decries the stagnation of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).

CAP has not only vilified farmers as climate culprits, but also eroded legislative safeguards designed to protect their interests. Mr. Győrffy’s criticism extends to the European Green Deal, which he views as

an ill-conceived mandate potentially swayed by the looming specter of impending European Parliament elections.

Yet, perhaps the most pressing concern lies in the unhindered importation of Ukrainian grain and food products, sidestepping the stringent safety standards imposed on European farmers and bestowing Ukrainian producers with an unfair competitive edge.

As the drumbeat of dissent grows louder, Balázs Győrffy emphasizes the urgency of addressing these disparities and raising awareness of the plight facing European farmers. Through demonstrations and advocacy efforts, he underscores the imperative of advocating for fair trade practices and robust agricultural policies that prioritize the interests and sustainability of farmers across the continent.

The joint demonstration serves as both a rallying cry and a call to action in the ongoing struggle to protect the livelihoods of European farmers amid the shifting tides of global trade.
