Used Car Market on the Rise – Most Popular Models Revealed

Hungary Today 2024.09.11.

As the new car market seems to be disappearing and the price of MPVs (multi-purpose vehicles) is rising, an increasing number of people are looking for used family cars, writes Világgazdaság. The Opel Zafira, the Volkswagen Touran and the Renault Scénic top the popularity rankings for MPVs, according to research by Használtautó.hu.

The lowest average price of HUF 622,000 (EUR 1,569) is for a Citroën Xsara, which is 18.5 years old on average (the oldest on the list), while the highest average price of HUF 3,667,000 (EUR 9,252) is for a Ford S-Max, which is 10.9 years old on average (the youngest on the list).

As the new car market seems to be disappearing, an increasing number of people are looking for used cars.

For these practical cars, buyers are also willing to dig deeper into their pockets, therefore the average age of the models in the top list is 13.8 years younger than the average age of the entire Hungarian car fleet,

said András Horváth, car market expert at Használtautó.hu.

As Hungary Today reported in summer, the Hungarian used car market is booming on an unprecedented level. Demand is shifting towards older and cheaper vehicles, with 37 percent of sales involving cars at least 20 years old and more than 60 percent at least 15 years old.

Concerning the new car market, the year 2024 has started well, with roughly 7,000 more cars registered in the first four months compared to 2023. This year, the supply chain is no longer affected by the shortage of semi-conductors, and as a result, delivery times are back to normal. There was also a particularly significant increase in the number of electric vehicles, with nearly 50 percent more e-cars on the road compared to the same period last year.
