Performance of the Déryné Company at last year’s Déryné Festival in Sátoraljaújhely (near the Slovak border)

A new element of the Déryné Program, the Borderless Program (Határtalan Program), will be launched this March, bringing theater to 60 cross-border settlements by the end of December, in cooperation with the Rákóczi Association, announced Balázs Hankó, Minister of Culture and Innovation, at a press conference on Wednesday.

It is clear “that we are committed to Hungarian culture that unites the nation across borders,” the minister stressed at the event celebrating the fifth anniversary of the Déryné Program. He recalled that last year, the Déryné Program held 3,337 events, reaching 462,000 people, and next year they expect to reach 800,000 Hungarians in the Carpathian Basin.

He expressed his pleasure that this unique initiative has been given a new dimension with the Borderless Program, “the most essential dimension of our national existence.” He stressed that we are one nation here in the Carpathian Basin, Hungarians, and it is necessary to show through the Déryné Program that theater belongs to everyone. “Because we know that culture, Hungarian culture, Hungarian theater, the love of theater, love of our classics unites us,” he said.

Fact

The Déryné Program is a gap-filling initiative that aims to provide support in a complex way to hitherto peripheral areas of the theater profession. Launched in March 2020, the initiative aims to revive and revitalize rural cultural life, bringing quality theatrical productions to as many villages as possible, including the most remote and smallest ones.

According to Attila Vidnyánszky, head of the National Theater, the creation of the Déryné Program was the result of a long process.

Step by step, they have reached this system, something like no other in the world, he stressed, adding that their guests from abroad also consider it a benchmark.

The Executive Director of the Déryné Program, Domonkos Márk Kis, stressed that every effort will be made to ensure the efficient, professional, and high-quality implementation of the Borderless Program, involving organizations within and beyond the borders.

He recalled that the launch of the Déryné Program was announced five years ago on March 9, and will be celebrated with the 50th Déryné Young Woman Lecture in Sátoraljaújhely. The Déryné Company was founded, followed by the Wanderer sub-program, the playwriting workshop, the Traveling Theater and the Country Tour sub-programs, the KultUp sub-program, and the László Vitéz sub-program for kindergarten children, he said.

He noted that over the past five years, 12,700 lectures and programs have been held, and 1,400 venues have been registered.

Together with the new program now being launched, their portfolio now includes nine programs and sub-programs.

He pointed out that they had also produced an educational toolkit, an innovative initiative in drama education.
