After nearly two decades of construction, Croatia has completed the final section of its motorway to the Adriatic Sea, marking a major milestone in the long-awaited expressway linking Budapest to the coast via Sarajevo.
The final stretch to the Hungarian border is now finished, paving the way for the Croatian segment of the route to officially open this fall, reports the business news portal Tőzsdefórum. However, parts of the Bosnian section still remain under development and are not yet up to expressway standards.
After almost twenty years, the last section between the M6 motorway and the Croatian A5 motorway has been completed. This extension will open up the possibility of traveling from Budapest via Beli Manastir (Pélmonostor) and Osijek (Eszék) on the Croatian side to the Adriatic Sea via the motorway without traffic jams. The travel time between Osijek and Budapest will be reduced to two hours.
Eight structures were built on the short but important section in Croatia, including a viaduct, two overpasses, and five bridges. The largest structure is the 318-meter-long Karasica Viaduct, which spans both a river and a railway line. The portal points out that
it will be necessary to wait a little longer before the motorway can be used, as the official procedures are not expected to be completed until September.
“In Bosnia, it will take years before construction is completed, but the goal is to be able to drive to the Adriatic Sea via the motorway,” wrote MP János Hargitai on his Facebook page.
The Hungarian section of the M6 to the Croatian border was handed over last year, but work was still ongoing on the Croatian side at that time.
The newly completed section connects the M6 motorway with Beli Manastir, from where the road leads through Bosnia and Herzegovina via Osijek and Sarajevo to the Croatian coast. The website points out that there is currently no concrete information available about the condition of the roads on the section in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but construction of the entire motorway on this section has not yet been completed. However, the Corridor Vc project is planned to provide a fast connection from Budapest to the Adriatic port of Ploče. If all goes as expected, the corridor should be finished by 2028.
