UN Failing in Its Peacekeeping Role amid Ukraine War, Says FM Péter Szijjártó

The UN is clearly preoccupied with its own problems and its own dysfunction, and for the time being appears incapable of supporting peace efforts, even though this is its primary task, Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, stated on Thursday in Budapest.

The Minister received Abdulla Shahid, President of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly, and then explained that Hungary has been living in the shadow of the war in Ukraine for three and a half years and has been facing the challenges it poses for the same amount of time.

“For three and a half years, we Hungarians have been arguing for a ceasefire and peace talks. For three and a half years, we have been harshly criticized for this, even though if this war had been ended at the beginning, millions of lives could have been saved, and Ukraine could have been prevented from being left in ruins and the European economy from suffering,” he emphasized.

“The pro-war liberal mainstream has undermined every peace initiative and made every peace effort more difficult. If the liberal mainstream politicians had not made peace efforts more difficult, peace would have been achievable by now,” he added.

Péter Szijjártó pointed out that it is the UN’s job to make sure that warring parties can resolve their conflicts at the negotiating table.

“Eighty years after the UN was founded, we sadly have to admit that the UN is not up to the job, even though international politics is now threatened by the danger of a world war.

In this situation of global danger, the UN should be taking action to preserve world peace, but the UN is clearly preoccupied with its own problems and dysfunction, and for the time being appears incapable of helping peace efforts,” he emphasized.

The Minister stated that despite the attacks, the Hungarian Government will not give up and wants peace in its neighboring country as soon as possible, as this is the only way to save lives and put an end to the recent wave of violence in Ukraine.

“There have been Hungarian fatalities as a result of these violent attacks. It is unacceptable that such scenes are taking place in the heart of Europe in the 21st century, and the international community must take action against this,” he remarked.

“We want peace in Ukraine as soon as possible so that people’s lives can be spared and saved. We agreed with the 76th President of the UN General Assembly that there is no solution to wars, including the war in Ukraine, on the battlefield; the solution can only be found at the negotiating table, and we must finally sit down at that negotiating table. Unfortunately, the warmongers have prevented this so far,” he concluded.
