Another Transcarpathian soldier has died in the war in Ukraine, Kárpátalja.ma reports. Valeriy Méhes was killed by a rocket attack in Kharkiv. The soldier, who was only 19 years old, died while he was asleep.
The website names investigative journalist, Olena Mudra’s Facebook post as a source. The young man from Nagyszőlős (Vynohradiv) graduated from the Military Lyceum of Mukachevo (Munkács) in 2019.
Valeriy Méhes is the third victim of the Ukrainian-Russian war from Transcarpathia. Previously, Vaszil Bilak, 22, from Munkács and Sándor Kis, 29, from Ungvár (Uzhhorod) were killed in the fighting.
As we have also reported before, Sándor Kis from Transcarpathia was on the last Ukrainian boat that did not surrender to the Russians during the fighting around the town of Ochakov, in the southern part of the country. Kis was a soldier in the Ukrainian Navy and the first Hungarian to die in the Russian-Ukrainian war. “Alexander sacrificed his life for peace for his children. I believe that I have no other task than to preserve his memory and fulfill the dream of our two little boys. Georg and Vaseli will always remember their father,” said Kis’s widow, before adding, “I am proud of my husband.”
It was announced that Hungary is supporting Kis’ relatives. “The Hungarian government and the Hungarian people are deeply shocked that 29-year-old Sándor Kis from Transcarpathia was killed in the clashes in Ochakovi in the Russian-Ukrainian war that broke out on February 24,” the Consulate General of Hungary in Ungvár (Uzhhorod) announced on their social media page. The Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade is supporting the family of the Hungarian-born war hero and his two minor children. The donation was accepted by the mother of the deceased soldier on February 28, 2022, at the Consulate General.
