Ukrainian War: Gov’t Aid Program Collects HUF 65 Million in Donations

MTI-Hungary Today 2022.02.28.

The government’s aid program to help Ukrainian citizens fleeing from war has collected 65 million forints (EUR 178,000) in donations, government spokeswoman Alexandra Szentkirályi said on Monday.

The program was launched on Friday “to help ethnic Hungarians and anyone fleeing Ukraine for their lives”, the prime minister’s chief of staff, Gergely Gulyás, said last week.

Aid centers set up on the Ukrainian-Hungarian border will receive 10 million forints each of the funds, which were collected through a phone line and charity organizations.

Miklós Soltész, the state secretary for church and state relations and head of the National Humanitarian Coordination Council, said the aid points further inland in the localities of Lónya, Barabás, Beregsurány, and Tiszabecs would also receive support to “ensure order and free passage” near the border.

The Budapest municipality said it was hosting 120 refugees at a shelter, mostly families with children. Some of the families are on their way to western Europe, but others, mostly ethnic Hungarian families from Transcarpathia, are planning to stay, the statement said.
