Although they are obliged to start the procedure for the recognition of their diplomas in Hungary, refugee healthcare workers can work in Hungary even before their diplomas are validated.
According to a new Hungarian government decree, doctors and nurses can work in their profession in Hungary under the “supervised activity rules” of the Health Act “until the recognition or naturalization procedure is completed,” but they must start this procedure. They are further helped by the fact that this is “not conditional on a residence permit issued for the purpose of pursuing gainful activity or ensuring family cohabitation.”
Doctors, dentists, and pharmacists can also enroll in the tertiary vocational training system in the health sector before their diplomas are recognized, but they must start the recognition procedure as well.
The government has again used its coronavirus emergency authority to amend the law by decree, so this decree is only valid during an emergency, but as was the case before, it can be incorporated into the law when the emergency ends.
The decree was published in the Magyar Közlöny (Hungarian Gazette) and can be read here.
