In Transcarpathia, a GAZ-66 truck with a black military license plate crossed the state border from Ukraine into Hungary. Hungarian border guards detained 32 Ukrainian citizens, said Colonel Andriy Demchenko, spokesman for the Ukrainian border guard service.
The official told the Ukrainska Pravda news portal that the incident happened on Sunday between Kosyno (Kockaszállás) and (Velyka Byihan’) Nagybégány. CCTV cameras recorded the truck driving from the dirt road across the farmlands towards the border. The vehicle was later found empty on the Hungarian side, with all its occupants abandoned.
The Hungarian side later announced the detention of 32 people,
the spokesman said.
As he said, the illegal border crossing took place in the area controlled by the border guard detachment in Mukachevo (Munkács), and that the necessary checks are currently being carried out. Technical means were used to record the vehicle’s tracks to the neighboring country, he noted. In addition, Ukrainian border guards have detained several persons who may be involved in the illegal transit of these people.
He explained that organized criminal groups involved in people smuggling usually promise to bring the offenders across the state border for considerable sums of money.
During the check it was not established if the car belonged to military units.
The officer noted that the Hungarian side had not yet handed the detained Ukrainian citizens over to Ukraine.
