Ukraine’s EU Accession Is “not a good deal,” Warns Prime Minister

Hungary Today 2025.05.07.

Manfred Weber sent a message to Hungarians at Tuesday’s press conference, and Viktor Orbán did not remain silent. A debate formed on social media, with the Prime Minister emphasizing that it would be a huge mistake to accept Ukraine into the European Union.

Manfred Weber, President of the European People’s Party, said that support for Ukraine is unconditional and must remain so, Mandiner reported. Whatever others decide in the coming weeks and months, the EU must be ready to intervene, he added. He stressed that

the European People’s Party wants to give Ukraine a clear European perspective, and pointed out that just as the Hungarian people were happy to join the EU with all its benefits, such as the political security or the economic development, the Ukrainian people have the same right to do so.

The EPP President reiterated that his political group supports Ukraine by all means, and added that he hopes the Hungarian government will understand this. He remarked that it is currently 26 Member States against one, referring to the Hungarian veto on Ukraine’s accession.

Weber’s words did not go unanswered in Hungary. Viktor Orbán wrote on X that Hungary was admitted to the European Union because it was good for the members. “It was a good deal. For Germany as well, Herr Weber. The accession of Ukraine is not a good deal. Ukraine is not an added value but a liability. It is a huge mistake to send European funds to Ukraine instead of using them to strengthen the struggling European economy. It’s time for European leaders to start representing the European people, Herr Weber!” the Prime Minister stated.
