Hungary Signs Document Stating All Countries Have ‘Moral Obligation’ to Support Ukraine

Chairs of the Foreign Affairs Committees of twelve EU Member States, the United Kingdom, and Ukraine condemned Russian aggression against a free and independent Ukraine in a joint statement at a recent video conference.

According to Fidesz MP Zsolt Németh, chairman of the Hungarian Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, the video conference discussed the events of the Russian-Ukrainian war, and was attended by the foreign affairs representatives of the V4 countries, the Baltic Three, Bulgaria, Romania, Finland, Germany, and Sweden. They also exchanged views on the potential regional and global economic, social, migration-related, and humanitarian consequences of the “bloody conflict.”

In his speech at the conference, Németh stressed the importance of solidarity and unity, adding that the EU had clearly done well in these two areas over the past month. He also praised the role played by the Central and Eastern European region, including the V4 countries, in addressing the humanitarian situation in Ukraine.

According to the statement, participants of the conference issued a joint declaration condemning Russian aggression against a free and independent Ukraine, stating that the crimes committed by Russia cannot be justified.

They stressed that all countries individually, as well as the European Union and NATO, have a moral obligation to support Ukraine.

The statement also underlined that Russia bears full responsibility for the war and that Moscow’s military aggression against Ukraine is a war crime, and those responsible for the aggression must be brought before international courts.

They called on the authorities of EU Member States and NATO, as well as “all friendly countries that respect democracy, freedom, and human rights,” to impose tough sanctions. They also stressed that Ukraine is facing the biggest migration crisis in Europe since the Second World War.

The document called for Ukraine to be fast-tracked to become a candidate country for EU membership and later a full member. They also proposed that Ukraine be included in the Three Seas Initiative. The signatories of the declaration also called on the European Union to provide financial resources to support countries, including Hungary, that are hosting refugees from Ukraine, Fidesz MP Németh stated.
