Ukrainian leaders have not unequivocally denied financing activities against the Hungarian government, but they have not provided any details and promised to clarify the situation later, the Parliamentary State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said on Thursday on the M1 public media channel. Levente Magyar recently arrived home from Kyiv, where he asked the Ukrainian leadership to explain the smear campaign against Hungary, which the secret services say is being carried out with Ukraine’s support.

Levente Magyar said that he was curious to hear the Ukrainian side’s explanation for the action, but that he did not think they would get many. However, if they do, the retaliatory measures will have to be put in place, he added.

The State Secretary also spoke about the series of disqualifying measures that have dominated bilateral relations since 2014, severely affecting the Hungarian minority in Transcarpathia (formerly part of Hungary, now in Ukraine) and leaving the Hungarian minority in Ukraine “in an even worse situation than it was in Soviet times.” “This is obviously unacceptable for Budapest, as we feel responsible for all Hungarian communities beyond our borders, and if one of our communities is subjected to this kind of disqualification, especially in the 21st century, we must take action against such phenomena,” he emphasized.

Magyar pointed out that

for ten years there has been no solution to the issue of the use of the Hungarian language, which has now been joined by the financing of activities against the Hungarian government.

He said that if these two issues could not be resolved in the foreseeable future, Hungary would have to return to its previous policy of blocking Ukraine’s Euro-Atlantic integration process, such as the ongoing negotiation process with the European Union.

Speaking on Kossuth Radio, the State Secretary said that

the huge amount of money that has flowed into Ukraine is not only going to the frontline, not only to armaments and the war effort, but is also present in the country’s economy, with tangible and visible signs.

According to Magyar, a significant part of the aid was “flowing into the war economy and is reflected in consumption – there is an amazing supply in the shops, in many ways an amazing sense of prosperity in downtown Kyiv.”

Magyar noted that no one regrets this from the Ukrainians, because “they are paying a terrible price for this geopolitical battle that is taking place over their heads, and which is being fought for the country with the participation of the Ukrainian leadership.” He emphasized that Hungary has been helping Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees with all humanitarian means since the beginning of the war, yet they are constantly trying to involve Hungary in the conflict with various provocations, which Hungary is resisting.

Commenting on the telephone conversation between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, the State Secretary said that a major breakthrough had been made because “the two leaders had agreed on the path to peace.” He noted that Hungary had been calling for this for a long time, but it had not been possible under the previous US administration, so there was every hope that peace was “within reach.”
