The Hungarian national football team was eliminated from the European Championship in Germany on Wednesday, finishing fifth in the third-place table at the end of the group stage, narrowly missing out on qualifying for the last 16.
Hungary’s last hope in Group F was to overtake Croatia, third in Group B with two points, but that failed as Georgia beat the already safe group leaders Portugal 2-0. In addition to the first and second places in the six groups, the top four third-placed teams have qualified for the last 16.
This time, after two-goal defeats to Switzerland and hosts Germany, Marco Rossi’s men beat Scotland 1-0 with Kevin Csoboth’s 100th-minute goal to finish with three points and a minus-3 goal difference (2-5). Three years ago, they were also eliminated in the group stage of the previous continental tournament, finishing fourth by two points behind France, Germany and Portugal.
The Hungarian Football Federation (MLSZ) reacted to the elimination on X: “The results of the other groups of the European Championship were unfavorable for us, thus the Hungarian national team did not make it to the four best third-placed teams, and did not advance to the last sixteen. We will continue in the autumn in the Nations League.”
Kedvezőtlenül alakultak számunkra az Európa-bajnokság többi csoportjának eredményei, így a magyar válogatott nem került be a négy legjobb csoportharmadik közé, és nem jutott tovább a nyolcaddöntőbe. Folytatás ősszel a Nemzetek Ligájában.#csakegyutt #magyarok pic.twitter.com/T6HpykuPRP

The Hungarian national team will next play Germany in Düsseldorf on September 7 in the fourth season of Nations League.
The good news is that Barnabás Varga, the striker of the Hungarian national football team, has left the hospital in Stuttgart and returned home. As Hungary Today reported, Varga collided with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn in the 71st minute of Sunday night’s 1-0 group match between Hungary and Scotland, and lost consciousness in mid-air. After lengthy treatment he was taken to hospital in a stable condition with multiple facial fractures and a concussion.
The Ferencváros (FTC) striker, who scored in the first group match against Switzerland (1-3), underwent a successful operation on Monday and was visited by national team captain Marco Rossi the following day. According to the FTC website, their player is doing well considering the circumstances.

“Thanks for all the messages of support. It is good to be back home. Now I will have a few weeks of rest, then I will concentrate on my recovery. I have already seen the incident, I am not the type to be scared,” the striker said.
