The government has unveiled plans for a groundbreaking economic cooperation agreement with United Arab Emirates (UAE) businessman Mohamed Alabbar, reports Index.

The owner of the iconic Burj Khalifa tower’s company, Emaar Properties, has submitted a bid for the Rákosrendező (freight yard area) in Budapest, where they intend to construct a Dubai-style skyscraper, surpassing the current tallest building in Budapest, the MOL Campus.

The Hungarian Oil and Gas Company (MOL) erected their new headquarters in Budapest’s Kopaszi Dam area in 2021, replacing their 50 year old building. The New HQ skyscraper is 120-meters tall, 28-stories high, housing 2,500 employees. The new building was part of the Buda Park project, including new residential buildings and other communal facilities.

The draft agreement outlines key points, including the sale of necessary real estate without public procurement, recognition of the project as of high priority national economic importance of infrastructure development, and legislative measures for successful implementation.

The UAE Government is committing to a EUR 5 billion investment, including a planned railway station at the area.

Despite the ambitious plan, Mayor of Budapest Gergely Karácsony is criticizing the government’s attempt to replicate a controversial project, while Minister of Transport and Construction, János Lázár, promotes the vision of a new millennium city center in Budapest.
