U.S. Jamboree Camp Strengthens Ties between Hungarians from Abroad

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.07.31.

Almost a thousand Hungarian scouts from several continents gathered at the Jamboree Camp of the Hungarian Scout Association in Exteris, held in Fillmore, New York, until August 4.

The event, started on July 25 at the Sándor Sík Scout Park, brought together scouts from the United States, Canada, South America, Australia, Asia, Europe and the Carpathian Basin, who are participating in separate groups of sessions over 10 days.

The Jamboree  Camps are traditionally organized every five years by the Hungarian Scout Association in Exteris.

However, this year’s camp is a replacement for an event planned for 2020 that was postponed due to the Covid pandemic.

Eszti Pigniczky, the director of the 2024 camp, said that their association partly provides the financial background, helped by other camp fees and the support from the members of the diaspora. She added that participants who arrive by plane from another continent do not have to pay camp fees.

The director also noted that the main theme of the 2024 camp is the foundation of the Hungarian state.

The theme refers to the fact that participants are building the Hungarian nation even if they come from different parts of the world, and that they can “experience” the country that St. Stephen founded.

The so-called “Jubi Camps” have been held since 1956 with the participation of Hungarian scout troops from all over the world.

The Hungarian Scout Association in Exteris runs Scout Houses and Scout Parks under its ownership all over the world, including several locations in the United States, South America and Australia, as well as in Germany in Europe. The organization also owns the Sík Sándor Scout Park in Fillmore.
