The increase in U.S. investment in Hungary offsets the damage caused by the European Commission in the customs dispute, as three major U.S. investments have been announced since President Donald Trump took office, and more will follow, Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade stated, on Monday in Budapest.
The Minister pointed out that since U.S. President Donald Trump took office in January, four major American research and development investments have been announced in Hungary, and negotiations are in the final stages for several other significant corporate investments.
If all goes well, we will announce the next U.S. investment on Friday, followed by three more in September. Thus with the growth of U.S. investments in Hungary, the jobs they create and their positive impact on the Hungarian economy, we will be able to repair the damage caused by the European Commission,”
he said.
He emphasized that communication between Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and U.S. President Donald Trump is ongoing, and they can talk directly to each other at any time, therefore “obviously, a personal meeting can be arranged without any further ado, if necessary.”

“As for the secondary tariffs, we very much hope that this can be avoided. We also believe that a solution will finally be found in Ukraine within the deadline set by President Trump, and that the issue of secondary tariffs can then be taken off the agenda,” he said.
Péter Szijjártó also referred to the U.S.-European customs agreement concluded the previous day, recalling that at the time of Donald Trump’s inauguration, the Hungarian Government had already recommended to the European Commission that customs duties on the United States be reduced without delay.
If the European Commission had taken this step at the time, the customs dispute that the European Union has been forced to endure in recent months would not have happened,”
he said.
Good to be in Scotland to meet @POTUS for discussions on transatlantic trade today.
The EU-US trade relationship is the world’s biggest.
I look forward to our talks ↓ https://t.co/pMWoCCwycn

“This tariff dispute has repeatedly caused serious damage to the European Union and the European economy, both to President Ursula von der Leyen and to the European Commission. A worse agreement with the United States than those secured by our competitors could have been avoided if the European Commission had made the necessary decisions in time, when President Trump took office,” he continued.
Unfortunately, this is not the first time that von der Leyen’s European Commission has put the European economy in an extremely difficult position. The continuous bad, wrong, and dangerous decisions of recent years are causing serious problems for the European economy, therefore it is time for a comprehensive change of leadership in Brussels,”
he added.
