Two Hungarian Cities among the Happiest in the World

Hungary Today 2025.05.05.

For the sixth year running, the Institute for Quality of Life has compiled a list of the happiest, most livable cities, based on 82 indicators. This time, two Hungarian cities are also included in the ranking, Hirado.hu reports.

Copenhagen came first in the 2025 ranking of the happiest cities in the world, compiled by the Institute for Quality of Life as part of the Happy City Index. The institute looked at 82 different indicators when compiling the list this year, and grouped them into six main categories: civic participation, governance, environment, health, economy, and mobility.

The city closest to Budapest in the ranking was Vienna, which was ranked 12th with 918 points, 121 points behind Copenhagen. In regional terms, Vienna is followed by the Slovenian capital Ljubljana, which came 41st.

Budapest was ranked 110th with 700 points, ahead of several rivals in the region, such as Prague (153rd), Sofia (155th), and Warsaw (175th).

Hungary’s second most populous city performed particularly well in terms of aspects directly affecting its population, scoring 160 points in this category, while its 137 points for environmental indicators was also a remarkable achievement.
