A memorial tablet dedicated to two families that saved Jews during the second world war in cooperation with Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg was inaugurated in Budapest on Thursday.
Members of the Nako and Berg families gave shelter to many persecuted Jews during the Holocaust, Athena Görög, head of the Greek Institute, said. As the Nakos were of Greek origin, the tablet was erected at the initiative of Hungary’s Greek community, she added.
The event was attended by Arsenios Kardamakis, Metropolitan of Austria and Exarch of Hungary and Central Europe, Slomó Köves, chief rabbi of the Unified Hungarian Jewish Congregation), and Christian-Democrat lawmaker Péter Harrach.
