Travel Is More Important to Hungarians than Purchasing a Car

MTI-Hungary Today 2025.05.28.

Thirty-six percent of Hungarians are planning a vacation abroad this summer, with those planning to travel expecting to spend an average of 300,000 forints (742.75 euros) per person, said Bence Sármay, head of Visa Hungary, speaking at a press conference held jointly with MBH Bank in Budapest on Tuesday, based on their latest research.

Bence Sármay highlighted that the most popular destinations for Hungarian tourists continue to be Croatia, Italy, Spain, Austria, and Greece, with an average stay of eight nights. He also pointed out that Hungarian tourists’ planned spending abroad is 40,000 forints (99 euros) lower than the Central and Eastern European regional average. The survey of a sample of 1,000 people showed that eight out of ten Hungarians would pay by bank card abroad, mainly because of the convenience and speed it offers. 55 percent of respondents track their spending abroad using a banking app, although only 10 percent use the app’s spending analysis feature.

Csaba Soós, MBH Bank’s retail business development manager, emphasized that

travel is the eighth most important savings goal in Hungary. This year, it even surpassed car purchases.

76 percent of travelers cover the cost of their vacations mainly from savings, while 34 percent spend part of their current monthly income on travel. While households spend an average of 410,000 forints (1,015 euros) on domestic vacations, they spend 760,000 forints (1,881 euros) on trips abroad.

He added that 43 percent of those surveyed would vacation domestically, 30 percent on European beaches, and eight percent outside Europe. July and August remain the most popular months for vacations, and the most important consideration for vacationers is that the holiday not be too expensive.

Participants in the MBH Bank survey stated that their most important expectations from banks in relation to travel are fast and cheap currency exchange, foreign currency accounts, and travel insurance.

Although this proportion has decreased in recent years, half of travelers still do not take out travel or accident insurance, with 57 percent of those traveling abroad saying they do purchase insurance.
