For the 23rd time, the Kevi Shepherd Festival is held in Túrkeve. The town of Túrkeve is located in Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok County, on the bank of the Hortobágy-Berettyó River. The locals say Túrkevi or simply, ‘Kevi.’
The Shepherd Festival has a history of more than 15 years. It was awarded with the recommendation of the Tourism Award of the North Great Plain Region and the Tourism Mark of Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok County. The gastro-cultural open-air event is visited by some 10-15,000 visitors every year.
In the center of Túrkeve, in traditional shepherd huts reminding us of the past, the shepherds of Kevi await visitors with a delicious sheep stew. Demonstrations include sheep shearing, shepherd dogs, tests of strength, folk music, hundreds of unforgettable local dishes cooked in stews – the Kevi sheep stew – and various delicacies made from stews over an open fire will be available.
Stall vendors, craft demonstrations, a folk playhouse, an amusement park, and a market with handicraft products await visitors. In addition to the traditional events, there is party in the evening by well-known entertainers, bands, and fireworks.
In addition to preserving the traditions and the festival atmosphere, the event is also an important element in promoting sheep and mutton breeding. In Nagykunság, sheep goulash is a festive dish. On the two days of the event, cooking competitions are held in different categories for those who know how to prepare this specialty. The best will be rewarded with prizes, and visitors will have the opportunity to have a stew prepared beforehand for lunch.
