Tokaj Ranked among Europe’s Top 10 Wine Regions

Hungary Today 2025.07.07.

The historic wine region of Tokaj has been voted one of the top 10 best European wine regions for 2025, by travel insurance experts at QuoteZone. This is exciting news for wine lovers and travel enthusiasts alike, as Tokaj is establishing itself as a sought-after destination for enjoyable short breaks.

QuoteZone analyzed the growing travel trend and compiled the 2025 Vineyard Mini-Break Index that ranks the best wine regions in Europe. Well-known regions such as Rioja, Tuscany, and Bordeaux, all renowned for their first-class wines and exquisite culinary experiences, were taken into consideration.

The ranking was determined by calculating the average cost of a cellar tour, a three-night hotel stay and a bottle of wine, as well as taking into account weather conditions and awards won for wine quality or the vineyard itself.

Based on these criteria, Rioja, Spain’s largest and arguably most iconic wine region, where wine has been made for 2,000 years, took the top spot. The area boasts 600 wineries and an astonishing 65,000 hectares of vineyards. Rioja’s wines are world-renowned, having earned top rankings and prestigious awards last year, including at the Decanter World Wine Awards and the World’s Best Vineyards. Prices there are also favorable, with a bottle of wine in Rioja costing around £22 and a cellar tour £19. In Bordeaux, for instance, the respective prices are £34.36 and £15.20.

Two Italian regions, Piedmont and Tuscany, took second and third place, while

Hungary’s treasure, the Tokaj wine region, secured an impressive ninth place.

Here, the average cost of a bottle of wine is around £27.75, and a wine tour costs £19.4 on average.
