Thrilling Olympic Victory Against Argentina in Handball

Hungary Today 2024.07.30.

The men’s handball team secured a decisive 35-25 victory over Argentina at the Olympics, overcoming a brief challenge in the first half, writes Magyar Nemzet.

The Hungarian team, who faced pressure following a defeat to Egypt, started the match strongly. Gábor Ancsin and Zoltán Szita contributed early goals, with Szita scoring twice despite a subdued performance in the first game. Although Argentina briefly led 10-9 after a controversial call against Máté Lékai, Hungary quickly regained control. Kristóf Palasics’s penalty save and Bence Bánhidi’s equalizer helped the team reestablish their lead.

By halftime, Hungary was ahead 17-12, thanks to additional goals from Bence Imre, Patrik Ligetvári, and Richárd Bodó.

The second half saw Hungary maintain their lead, despite Argentina’s attempts at a seven-on-six attack. The game was effectively decided when Argentine left wing James Parker received a red card, further weakening his team.

A concerning moment occurred when Gergő Fazekas was injured but soon returned to play. Hungary’s lead expanded to ten goals with Zoran Ilic’s empty-net goal, and despite further red cards for Argentina’s Pizarro, Hungary managed to secure the 35-25 win.

With two points from two rounds, Hungary faces tougher opponents ahead, including Norway, Denmark, and France. The defending champions France, currently without points after losses to Denmark and Norway, are also under pressure.
