Zoo Debrecen celebrated a triple bundle of joy this Capybara Appreciation Day, as resident capybaras Diégó and Mika have welcomed three healthy babies, the zoo announced on social media on Thursday. The arrival brings both delight to visitors and hope for a species increasingly threatened in the wild.
The zoo’s “cutest trio” is already charming guests as they toddle after their mother through the South America enclosure. Whether lounging in the sun or taking a dip in the water, the babies follow their mother everywhere.
Capybaras, native to South America, are the world’s largest rodents, often growing up to 60 kilograms. Despite their size, they are known for their calm and sociable nature. Their peaceful presence makes them beloved companions of other species, the zoo shared in its recent Facebook post.
The post emphasized the conservation importance of this birth. Capybaras are currently listed on the IUCN Red List due to habitat loss and increasing human-wildlife conflicts across their native range.
The arrival of these three pups not only brings joy but also underscores the zoo’s role in species conservation and education.
Visitors are encouraged to stop by and witness the playful pups as they explore their surroundings under the watchful eyes of their attentive parents. The post invites visitors to “Come visit Zoo Debrecen and see for yourself how these adorable creatures splash, lounge, and explore.”
