Thousands of visitors attended the Hungarian Embassy’s Open Day in Washington D.C. on Saturday, joining the annual tradition where EU embassies open their doors to U.S. visitors.

The event offered a diverse array of activities, including cultural programs, gastronomic presentations, and information booths showcasing Hungary’s rich heritage and tourist attractions. Children enjoyed a fairy tale film screening and engaging craft activities.

Provisional Representative Péter Schmitt highlighted the event’s significance in strengthening Hungarian national identity, especially with Hungary poised to assume the rotating presidency of the EU Council.

He emphasized the country’s commitment to a Europe of strong nations. Recognizing the upcoming European Parliament elections on June 9, special information points were set up to guide Hungarian citizens living in the U.S. through the voting process.

The day was enriched with performances by artistic ensembles from the U.S. capital, such as the Szikra Band, the Tisza Ensemble, and the Magnolia Hungarian Folk Band.

Various organizations representing the Hungarian diaspora, including the Kossuth Foundation, the Hungarian American Coalition, and the Hungarian Academy of Washington, showcased their contributions. Additionally, the HuGo mobile community app was introduced, allowing users to explore Hungarian-related sites in the United States.

The event drew nearly 3,000 visitors to the Hungarian Embassy, underlining its success in fostering cultural exchange and promoting Hungary-U.S. relations.

This Open Day is part of the EU Open House tradition in Washington, held annually on the Saturday closest to Europe Day, celebrated on May 9.
