This Year’s National Gallop Revives Equestrian Traditions

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.08.24.

The National Gallop, the biggest amateur horse race in Central and Eastern Europe, which will be held in Szilvásvárad (northern Hungary) between October 4 and 6, is renewed.

The biggest innovation of this year’s event is that it will be three-day long instead of two. On day zero, the Nemzetközi Rendőr Lovasverseny (“International Police Riding Competition”) will take place at the Lipica Equestrian Center in Szilvasvárad.

Visitors will be able to watch the equestrian regiments and police forces on standby from ten countries compete in skill competitions.

For the first time, HaZám Lovasudvar (“HaZám Riding Stables”) will present a children’s riding show, while the Gömöri Lovas és Népi Hagyományőrző Egyesület (“Gömör Horse and Folk Traditions Association”) will present a spectacular performance.

In 2024, under-18s will be able to compete in two age groups: 10-13 and 14-17, meaning that for the first time, 17-year-olds will also have the opportunity to compete.

Fact

The National Gallop is an annual historic horse race, aiming to be a cross-border, traditional festival of Hungarian heritage. The motif of the Hussar is strongly present in the event every year. The main goal of the event is to cultivate national traditions and to build bridges between the settlements and their inhabitants, between the Hungarian countryside and Budapest, and to re-elevate Hungary to the ranks of the equestrian nations. The focus of the program is on horses and equestrian sports, as well as the cavalry of different eras. The central element of the event is the eponymous “National Gallop”, for which every year around 100 municipalities enter their horses and riders. The National Gallop is open to all Hungarian municipalities, all communities from abroad and even individuals.
